LLA 2008

14 09 2008

Ahheem… *cough cough*…

juskawaime is officially a nominee of LLA – Lifelong Learner Award 2008

LLA

LLA

HAH! *mouth open big big*

>.<

A friend, Mel, has the audacity to nominate me for LLA. Hahaa though I felt that she is crazy to do that, I appreciated her for having so much faith in me and my studies… I was encouraged and pleased, in fact. When she told me , on last Tuesday night, after our Jap class, that she was planning to nominate me, I scoffed at her.. She must be joking!! Me? Lifelong Learner…?? hahaa

My impression is that Lifelong Learner Award’s nominees should be of considerable age.. (I am still young.. =p), constantly learning in their life journey and upgrading their skills/knowledge/expertise to stay competative and useful to this ever-changing working world.. This hat is definitely too big for me.. Anyway check out past individual winners of LLA here.

I told Mel that I am elated that she has this thought, I appreciated it and lets stop here…. Yet on thursday morning, I received an SMS from her stating:

“Ok I nominate you liao. You go see ur email. Good e luck heh heh..”

*WHHAATT!!*

I thought I will be receiving some sort of ‘notification’ from the organizer.. Nope .. it was what she wrote of me for the nomination Form. There are 4 qs that you need to answer:

1. What did the nominee do to constantly upgrade his/her skills?

2. How did the training help the nominee keep his job, do different areas of work or switch to a new career?

3. How did the nominee overcome challenges in his/her learning journey?

4. How did the training help the nominee to improve productivity, create better work flow, reduce costs or increase customer satisfaction?

This is what sweet Mel wrote:

Within the short span of time that I know her, she’s constantly taking up courses to upgrade herself, and sometimes concurrently as well while EXCELLING in all of them. She is always onto something new. I’ve never met anyone quite so driven.

It is not easy but she makes it seem like a breeze. She manages by playing hard as well as working and studying hard. She plays badminton and tennis (she used to play for the school) each week, and enjoys the company of her friends & discovering new places to eat/go. Religion & a bit of travel helps too. She is a very balanced individual.

I’m probably selling her short by stating only what little I know of her thus far, but I truly think the award should go to her.

Hahaa… It was such honour that someone felt this way for me.. Thank you Mel… *muack*

I can see why she felt that way (as in me taking up courses to upgrade myself always)… coz….

Year 2007 was a big step/change for me.. it was like the start of my ‘study’ year… =)

After working for 5 years… i suddenly realized the need to study more… I was deciding to either take a Master of same field, engineering, or some course of other fields.. like Tourism, marketing, and eventually I decided on Advanced Diploma in Mass Communication in MDIS, Management Development Institude of Singapore. I was particularly keen on Public Relations course.

MDIS

MDIS

I have completed all my modules including my graduation project so far. Have scored almost all ‘A’ for all my modules, except of Journalism – scoring a “B”. Am now waiting for the scores of my last semester’s exams – Public Relations and Graduation project. Hopefully I will be getting more good achievements =)

JCSS

JCSS

I also finally stop procastinating and signed up for Japanese course (Elementary) in JCS… It is a one year course (2hrs each week). I had always loved Japanese language, I even took Jap for my general electives in NTU for 2 semesters.. Unfortunately, I never take any JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) papers before as it is always held in December and it was the time for me to go home to Indonesia (during school holiday). I took my JLPT4 last year and managed to score well.. I continued to take intermediate Japanese course this year, and also registered for JLPT3 (it will be held on 7th Dec 2008, Sunday). To be able to handle this test, I also took up a JLPT3 preparation course. It is a 3 month course, which meant that I am having 4hrs of Japanese class every week…

After I completed my Mass Communication, I promised myself to do more exercises and concentrated on my Japanese.. So my weekly activity now is:

Monday: jogging

Tuesday: Japanese

Wed: Tennis

Thurs: Japanese

Fri: Gathering with friends

Sat & Sun: Badminton and/or swimming

There are also lots of things that I want to learn, know, experience, study, master…. like:

  1. Mastering Japanese Language
  2. Learning to draw comics
  3. Psychology
  4. Salsa dancing
  5. Line dancing
  6. Pottery?
  7. Calligraphy?
  8. Knitting?
  9. Photoshop skill?
  10. C/C++ language
  11. Photography
  12. Leadership skill
  13. Web site / blog skill

I guess this list will continue… and may change/modify over the years… I just hope that I will be able to accomplish them one by one …

Oh btw, I am writing this not to ask u to vote for me.. haha and need not nominate me also..

Coz one of the rules is:

Multiple submissions of the same nominee, whether by the same nominator or otherwise, shall not be entertained. Should MPL receive such multiple submissions, only the first entry shall be considered.

and another rule is:

A panel of judges, comprising representatives from MPL, WDA, NTUC and Spring Singapore, will review the nominations and select the final Award recipients. The selection and number of judges, and the manner in which the Award is judged shall be at MPL’s sole and absolute discretion. The judges’ and MPL’s decision at any and all stages of the Award is final. No enquiries, appeals, verbal or written, shall be entertained. The nominees and the nominators shall accept and abide by all decisions made by MPL and/or the judges concerning, without limitation, the rules of participation, procedures and regulations of the Award, the award of prizes and any other matters relating to the Award including the production thereof.

But  you can nominate others…

So why do you need to nominate?? (u may asked urself)

To recognize the efforts done by people surrounding you, encouraging and supporting them and also let the lifelong learning spirit continues … “Never Stop Thinking” is my company’s motto.. our personal motto should be “Never Stop Learning”..

Most importantly, you, as the nominator, can receive S$200/- for ur nominee is selected. And ur nominee can get S$500 to further upgrade his/her skills… Killing 2 birds in one stone.. Nice … =)

Each Award recipient (Individual category ONLY) shall be granted S$500 to spend on further self-improvement and self-development programmes. Each nominator of the Individual category, shall receive S$200 for the successful Award recipient.

Mel hopes I win.. I also do hope I win..

There are much I can do with the prize and the recognition.

But if I dun win, I still salute and look up to those lifelong learning spirit..

yes.. I finish one paper

5 11 2007

Yes.. i finished one exam paper (EM) today..

My most ‘trauma’  paper – as teacher is very demanding and strict.. and making me stressed all over..

paper is over, exam qs are not as difficult as I thought as..

But then a lot of topics are left out… making me study so hard for them…. Cheyy…

Oh well, it is over.. lets moves on.. and hope for the best..

I thought I will fail this paper.. let me see..

If can, hopefully can get at least a ‘B’ or ‘A’ (even better)… since my assignment is a B-…

Hopefully teacher will be more generous and lenient…  in his marking..

DOne abt 1 1/2 paper… I heard someone has used up 4 booklets!! Gosh.. that means 1 Qs = 1 booklet = 10 pages… what can she write huh??  *roll eyes*  It is this kind of people that spoiled market.. ={

Thank you Lord for the peace, wisdom and concentration that is bestowed to me. May I study hard again for the coming Saturday paper, Journalism.. Followed by Sunday, Japanese Oral test, Monday, Japanese vocab exams, and Tues – Japanese Listening and dictation tests.  Then there is a slight break before the JLPT4 paper on 2nd Dec..

Oh… in between, deep-sixed will be back! yeah!! =D

Healthy, Happy People

Line dancing promotes healthy mental health

juskawaime

Step, Hold, Side Step, Coaster Step, Forward Lock Step, Rocking Chair,  ½ pivot, Triple Full Turn R, Toe Strut R, Rock Back, Weave R, Side Rock, Touch, Heel Dig, Touch, Cross Rock …

These terms are not foreign to Mr. Ong Kee Lin who is very experienced in line-dancing. Mr. Ong, a line-dance instructor, has always love music and dancing since young, he picked up social dance in 1987 and switched to line dancing 9 years ago.

Mr. Ong is not the only exception here. Magdelene, a kindergarten teacher, also switches from social dance to line dancing in 1999. Why the switch? She shared that social dance needs partners, and with fewer guy partners, it was difficult to continue her favorite activity. One day, she came across a group of people who were dancing and her amazement is they were all dancing in a line! Line dancing solved her problem and she has been line-dancing these past 8 years.

line dance

“Line dancing is suitable for everyone, with or without partner, young, old, single, married with kids, married without kids. There are not many restrictions and we all can do line-dancing anywhere and anytime as long as there is music and space.” said the mother of two girls.

Line dancing is also a form of exercise and relaxation. Relaxation is good for the mind and the body. Life is not all about work and not having time to relax.

“Works is stressful sometime, so I took up line dancing to sweat it out and at the same, relieve some stress,” said Dolly, who is currently working in a trading company.

Dressed in comfortable attire, Dolly and with other sixty dancers could be found enjoying line-dancing in front of Singapore Post Office, next to Paya Lebar MRT Station every Friday night. Mr. Ong, who is the organizer for this event, shared that such line-dancing jams are organized to provide a venue for the students to practice their line-dancing steps outside classes. People who turned up at the jam are not entirely his students, but most turned up with their groups of friends or ‘kakis’. Some may even have a certain color code for their group.

This is also how line-dancing helps to create opportunity for bonding, keeping-in-touch, and meeting new friends of same interest. You can even try finding your life-partner here! A great example is Mr. Ong, who fell in love with his line-dancing student, Jane. Their love for line dancing has brought them together. They are now happily married and are still dancing together.

For Magdelene, line-dancing provides her more opportunity to interact and bond with her sister, Suzanne. Suzanne was introduced to line-dancing by Magdelene four years ago and there was no turning back. Now Suzanne, a housewife, checked up the new dance steps in the internet and shared her findings with her sister.

“My sister loves it! She said line dancing is her longest hobby so far! And look, she now knows the new dance steps, better than me!” Magdelene added with a smile. They now meet up weekly to attend the line dancing jam.

Though physical exercise is important, this year’s National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign also stresses the importance of mental health to our well-being. With mental well-being, one can have the capacity to enjoy life the fullest and deal with the normal stresses and challenges of life constructively.

So why not try Line dancing this time? After a fun and rejuvenating activity, you will feel refreshed and be ready to take on any challenges at work or at home.

Line dancing classes are charged normally for about $55 for 10-12 lessons. Go to your nearest Community Centre and sign up now for a healthy and happy you!

Censorship

3 10 2007
Is it an offence to buy VCD/DVDs released in other countries and brought into Singapore?
Videos sold outside Singapore are considered to be uncensored when brought into Singapore. The MDA works closely with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority to check on travellers who bring in uncensored and obscene videos at the checkpoints. At the same time, the MDA takes a balanced approach when travellers bring in items bought outside Singapore for personal consumption. These items include VCDs and DVDs. Some of the VCD/DVDs brought in may be from the exempted categories which do not require classification. All videos brought into Singapore should be declared and submitted to the Board of Film Censors (part of the MDA) for classification. The Board classifies videos under the Films Act based on the content and does not determine their origin, i.e. whether the videos are pirated. Pirated videos are illegal under the Copyright Act.
Why must there be censorship?
Censorship is practised in all societies to some degree and in varying forms — whether by community groups, industry bodies or government agencies. In Singapore, censorship exists to protect the young from unsuitable content as well as to maintain stability and harmony in our multi-racial and multi-religious society, while allowing more choice for adults. Our surveys show that Singaporeans generally find censorship standards acceptable. For example, in the recent Censorship Review Committee 2003 survey, more than 70% of the respondents were satisfied with our content standards. Of course, censorship alone is not sufficient. Whether we are able to maintain the moral tone of our society depends largely on the industry, artists and the community and on what society as a whole considers to be acceptable standards for media content. Hence it is a shared responsibility among the various stakeholders, with censorship being complemented by public education for greater media awareness.

How are films classified?
Film classification provides a wider choice for audiences while at the same time protecting the young from unsuitable content. There are five classification categories:

  • G (General)
    Wholesome films suitable for everyone
  • PG (Parental Guidance)
These films are generally suitable for all. But the rating alerts parents that they may wish to check the content of such films before watching with their children or allowing them to view the film on their own.
  • NC16 (No Children under 16)
NC16 rated films are suitable only for those 16 and above as they deal with fairly adult issues such as drug abuse which may be disturbing to younger children.
  • M18 (Mature 18)
M18 films are restricted to persons 18 years old and above. They may contain mature themes but with treatment that is sensitive and appropriate to those 18 years and above.
  • R21 (Restricted 21)
These films are only suitable for adults aged 21 and above. They may have graphic scenes of sex and violence.

In classifying a film, we take into consideration the film distributor’s preferred rating. For controversial films, the Board of Film Censors views the film for discussion and consults the Films Consultative Panel before making a decision.

Porno-viewing

3 10 2007
Some of us maybe happy to know this.. haha

Is accessing pornography on the Internet illegal?

The MDA does not monitor or track users’ access to any sites on the Internet and does not interfere with what individuals access in the privacy of their homes. We are primarily concerned with the purveyors and distributors of pornography. Unless you engage in such activities, the mere act of visiting such sites is not an offence.
